The final dive site is selected according to sea conditions, underwater visibility, currents, and the instructor’s safety assessment on the day.
1. Mirissa Point
Depth: approximately 6–12 metres
Mirissa Point is one of the most popular locations for beginner divers and Open Water students.
The site generally offers a relatively shallow underwater environment with sandy areas and reef sections, making it suitable for practicing basic scuba skills.
Depending on natural conditions, divers may see:
- Parrotfish
- Angelfish
- Pufferfish
- Small tropical reef fish
- Other coastal marine life
2. Mirissa Reef
Depth: approximately 6–10 metres
Mirissa Reef offers a shallow underwater environment that can be suitable for first-time divers.
Its manageable depth allows beginners to become comfortable with breathing underwater, buoyancy, and basic diving movements while remaining under close instructor supervision.
Marine life may include:
- Colorful reef fish

3. Coral Reef Point
Depth: approximately 8–12 metres
Coral Reef Point, located near the Bandaramulla area, is another location that may be used for beginner diving depending on daily sea conditions.
Its relatively shallow depth and proximity to shore can make it suitable for supervised first-time diving experiences.

However, visibility changes naturally depending on weather, currents, rainfall, and sea conditions.
What Should You Bring?
For your Discover Scuba Diving experience, you only need to bring a few personal items. All essential scuba diving equipment is normally provided by the dive center.
Essential Items
- Swimwear: Comfortable swimwear to wear underneath your wetsuit.
- Towel: For drying off after your dive.
- Extra Clothes: A dry set of clothes to change into after diving.
- ID Card or Passport: May be required for registration and safety documentation.
Optional Items
- Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Recommended for sun protection while helping reduce potential harm to marine environments.
- Waterproof Dry Bag: Useful for keeping your phone, wallet, documents, and other personal belongings dry.
- Underwater Camera / GoPro: You may bring your own underwater camera. For your first dive, however, it is usually better to focus on your instructor, your breathing, and enjoying the underwater experience.
- Water Bottle: Recommended for staying hydrated before and after your dive.
